UA Mine Rescue Team

What We Do

The UA Mine Rescue Team is a team of students that perform rescue drills and physical conditioning to build the skills necessary to join mine site emergency response teams once they enter the workforce.

PROMOTING WOMEN IN RESCUE

The U of A's mining program is one of the most gender-diverse in the country, and this is reflected in our team's makeup—50% of our members, including the Deputy Director, are female—helping to increase women's participation in all areas of the mining industry.

Where We Practice

The Student Mine Rescue Team practices at the San Xavier Underground Mining Laboratory, a non-producing underground mining facility owned and operated by the University.

2024 Mine Emergency Response Development Drill (MERD)

Our rescue team and their expertise have been utilized at our mine for full-scale emergency response drills such as the 2024 Mine Emergency Response Development Drill. At this event, our rescuers filled the role of a rescue team to help the MNE 426: Mining Health and Safety class perform the engineering and management roles necessary for an underground mining accident. The team has cross-trained with U of A EMS students, teaching them the principles of underground response while learning from them about triage and medical first-response practices.
